This is an episode of the Wine for Normal People podcast that discusses the phylloxera blight that afflicted French (and Spanish, and European, vineyards) in the 1860s-1890s. Although it isn’t covered specifically during this episode, the devastation wrought by phylloxera led to the transformation of the wine industry in Rioja, before it was, in turn, devastated by phylloxera. We have a few bottles in the shop that are made from grapes from pre-phylloxera vines and those are always very special. And before listening to this podcast I didn’t know Missouri wine was a thing!?!?
